Trees for Birds
This guided inquiry unit has a science focus. Students are aiming to attract birds to their local area and investigate which trees will attract the birds they want. The unit provides guidelines for the inquiry process as well as links to supporting New Zealand-based resources.
Key science concepts :
Birds need several things including water, food and air to survive.
Different birds have different needs.
The inquiry includes reference to relevant New Zealand Science curriculum objectives. The inquiry also includes associated NZ English objectives, Key Competencies, thinking skills and information literacy skills and strategies. Suggestions for supporting digital technologies are included.
It is designed particularly for levels 2 and 3 but students working at level 1 could work on it with extra scaffolding and those at level 4 could look at the concepts in greater depth.
